It is true. You can build your own website for free.

Several web hosts offer a free service. Yahoo has a service called GeoCities that was free, though it is no longer available. Other free webhosting services include Tripod andAngelfire.

Like social networks and blogs, you will never own the domain using a free webhost. And the domain will always include the host's name eg. www.yourhobby.tripod.com. Your site will also include advertising from the host that you will not benefit from.

Free webhosting was very popular in the beginning of the internet era. However, they offer very little opportunity to monetize. And in my opinion, they also have an "unprofessional"feel to them.

The only good reason to build your own website with a free webhost is for personal hobbies and interests. They are taken even less seriously than social networking sites.

Many corporations use social networking to market to younger people, and blogs to communicate with their customers. But I can't think of any legitimate business that uses a free webhosting service.

Free webhosting may offer substantial customization options compared to social networks and blogs. However, since they are free, the amount of information you can put on that site is usually limited.

And you will not learn how to build your own website. You will be so limited, you will never experience the benefits real webpage building.

You can usually sell products or services with a free webhost. However, due to the host's advertising, the unprofessional look and feel, and the lack of a true domain name, you may find it very difficult to earn any income.

The best way to build your own website, is with a paid hosting service. This is how most conventional websites are made. With this method, you purchase a domain name, and pay a company to host your site on their servers. And while I don't suggest rushing to build your own website, it can be done very quickly.

Because you own the domain and you are paying for hosting services, you will be paid for any advertising on your site. You are also free to pursue other methods of earning money such as selling your own products and services or selling an affiliate's products and services.

Paying for a hosting service can be very cheap or very expensive depending on the company and options you choose. Most companies will offer you dozens of email accounts and lots of bandwidth for a higher fee.

But the truth is, you probably will never need most of those services, and almost certainly will not need them when first starting off.

Using paid hosting has another tremendous advantage. You are almost unlimited in how you can customize and design your site. You can literally make your own website in any way you like, though it is best that you use common sense when doing so.

The primary downside to using a paid service is that you are pretty much on your own.
