First: Focus Each Page Let's pretend you're building a website about New York Sports, and one of your keywords is "new york baseball". You can probably choose three different keywords for this page:
But "new york baseball" is your primary keyword. Therefore, when you are creating the page, you must make sure to use that keyword "new york baseball" properly. We'll discuss this in more depth in the section about SEO and page structure. If your page is about New York baseball, do not make your page only about the New York Mets. Nor make your page about just the Yankees. And you definitely should not make your page about Pennsylvania baseball. Discuss New York Baseball, and include a few references to the Mets and Yankees. While you're building a website, make sure You keep each page focused on one topic. Use Good SEO And Page Structure Once you have your primary keyword for your page on New York baseball, it's time to use it properly. Proper use of this keyword will improve your website rankings. There used to be a time when webmasters would stuff their pages full of specific keywords in order to get high rankings. But those days are long gone. The search engines have evolved a great deal in the past decade. Modern search engines can recognize when someone is trying to beat the system by stuffing keywords, copying content, or hiding text. Nowadays, the only SEO you really need when building a website, is what I call page structure. Using proper page structure, will help the Search Engines know what your page (and website) is about. There are two types of links that you can utilize. Both will help improve your website.
You should include relevant links between pages within your site whenever you can. The best type of link is an "anchor text" link. An anchor text link includes the keyword for the page you're linking to. For example: When was the last time you read a good horror novel? Most of your pages should link to your home page. Therefore, your home page will receive several little votes of confidence. Links from other websites significantly improves your website. That is because search engines see the inbound links to your page as a vote for your page. These inbound links are even more beneficial when they come from sites that have high PageRank themselves. Let's continue with our New York Sports example. Major League Baseball's website (MLB.com) is a very popular website. It currently has a Google PageRank of 7 out of 10. Imagine if you could get a link from MLB.com to your page about New York baseball? Can you imagine how important it would look to the search engines if you got a vote of confidence from the premier baseball website? Of course, it's nearly impossible to get a link from a site like MLB.com. But there are hundreds, even thousands, of other websites that are about New York and sports and baseball. While none of them will match MLB.com, links from all of these websites will add up. It will be votes of confidence from hundreds of regular websites. Now the only problem is to get those websites to link to you. This is when you must start learning about promoting websites.
