Social networking websites have come to define the new age of the internet. These are websites that bring communities of people together online.

Sometimes these communities share similar interests. Sometimes they are as diverse as the world around us. But what all social networking sites have in common is that a lot of people use them together.

And now webmasters have gotten into the act. But not for building communities. Many of us only use these websites to build traffic and increase website rankings.

But there's a technique to marketing on social networks. Doing the wrong thing will waste time, expose you as a fraud, and annoy a lot of people. So follow these rules to social network marketing:

  1. Don't do any marketing; we all hate Twitter spam.
  2. Be for real. Make real friends on Facebook. Get real followers on Twitter.
  3. Participate. Don't just Digg your articles. Digg other articles you think are good also.
  4. Be yourself. No one wants to befriend (or buy from) a fraud. Don't pretend to be something you're not.
  5. Don't go too far. Social networking takes time. And time is valuable. Alot a specific amount of time to your social networking activities and stick with it.
