Using Twitter With Your Website

What's The Purpose of Twitter?

One of life's unanswered questions is: "What's the Purpose of Twitter?" Another one is: "How Can I Use Twitter for My Business?"

Neither one of these questions are easy to answer. First, let's understand what Twitter is.

In short, Twitter is a micro-blogging system. Where a regular blog allows you to create posts of any size about whatever you want, Twitter lets you create small posts about whatever you want.

Very small posts. No more than 140 characters.

The allure of Twitter is not the technology. The allure is the ability to keep up with thousands of people around the world. Unfortunately, this leads to a lot of nonsense being put on Twitter.

But maybe that's part of the allure also. In a way, Twitter allows us to make connections with other people and share information about what we're doing.

Using Twitter For Your Online Business

The question is, how can we make money from this?

You can post links in your Tweets (Twitter posts). But don't try to do any marketing or web promoting. Most people don't follow these links, and just about everyone avoids marketers on Twitter.

Don't even think about trying to sell anything in your posts. It just doesn't work.

Truth be told, at this time, it's very difficult to make money from Twitter directly.

  • Very few people follow links in Tweets.
  • Most people avoid sale's pitches.
  • Direct selling is taboo and likely to lose you more followers than you'll gain.
  • Indirect selling is also very tricky.

The best way to use Twitter is how it was meant to be used. It was made to create, strengthen, and deepen relationships. So use it to do that.

Build your site the way it's supposed to built. Use great content and some smarts. As time goes by and you continue to add content and expand your site, you will attract more and more visitors.

And then use Twitter to keep them coming back and deepen your relationship.

You're going to come across a whole lot of methods and ideas about making money using Twitter. Most of these things are internet scams. Twitter is just part of a complete system. It is a relationship tool. Not a marketing tool.

Use Twitter in conjunction with your blog, Facebook page, and website. But make sure you do your job. And your job is to provide your visitors with valuable information, services, and products.

Twitch's Cool Info: "Twitter is a tool. And people who market on Twitter are tools too."

Adding Twitter To Your System

Here's a step-by-step method to incorporating Twitter into your own system.

  1. First and foremost, build your website. Add a Twitter link where everyone who visits your site can see it.
  2. Create a blog for your website. If your website is a textbook, your blog is a magazine. Update your blog regularly. Add your Twitter link where everyone who visits your blog can see it.
  3. Create a Facebook page for your business. Join groups that are related to your website's niche. Post updates from your website to your Facebook page. Include your Twitter link to your Facebook page.
  4. When you update your website, Tweet it.
  5. When you update your blog, Tweet it.
  6. When you see a movie you like, Tweet it.
  7. When your kid does something cute, Tweet it.
  8. When you visit a restaurant you loved, Tweet it.
  9. When something exciting happens in your life, Tweet it.
  10. Most importantly, when your daily life intersects your website's niche, Tweet it!

Keep in mind, you only need to spend a few minutes a day, or maybe even a week, sending Tweets. Don't get too wrapped up in it since your website and blog will attract way more real customers than your Twitter account ever will.

It can be difficult maintaining this system. Most of you are probably not to the point yet where you can spend your entire day just working on your website. But don't get discouraged if you fall behind or your Tweets are becoming few and far between.

It is just part of your system. You can always come back to it later. Your website and blog deserve much more attention.

Twitter is just a tool. Your blog or website is the machine.
